My ears are tuned to hear silver change. The difference in sound is obvious. I listen to the people in front of me get change.

I always check my change but have never found any pre-1965 coinage in the mix. I fairly regularly find a 1965 quarter and immediately look at it and exclaim "YOU MOCK ME!"
Is it wrong to talk to your change? :10_1_19: |
Re: got a very nice 1944 quarter in my change yesterday. remember to always check yo
Times get tough and people scrape up all the change in the house to buy milk or bread.
Just another reason for me to use cash, 'cause you get no change from a digital transaction. |

i know what you mean. i strated saving 1966s and 1965s just to illustrate gresham's law to my wife. i get at least 1 or 2 week.

I he's talking about 65 and 66 quarters, then no, it's not a major score. I think his goal was to show how common those are, and how rare 64 and earlier are.
I got a '36 mercury dime from a vending machine a few weeks ago... I figure it was karma, because I was volunteering at Harvester's (Kansas City area community food network) at the time. The only other silver I've found in the last several years was a '63 dime in some change we'd packed up from our old apartment when we moved 3 1/2 years ago, and I just finally got around to sorting it last month. Lots of pre-82 pennies though :ok: Oh, and last year when buying some 90% and SAEs at a coin shop I got a 1928 Federal Reserve Note in change... "Redeemable in gold on demand"... I wish. Unfortunately, it's got a small piece torn out of it, so it's only worth $25-$30. |
Re: got a very nice 1944 quarter in my change yesterday. remember to always check yo
I went to the coin store today and received in change, a pre '82 copper penny and a 1946 Nickel. Not much but this is from a coin store...

Re: got a very nice 1944 quarter in my change yesterday. remember to always check yo
sorry TA, i should clarify. i meant 1965 and 1966 quarters. they are worthless. my wife didn't ever believe me about silver until i showed her how quarters were 90% prior to 1964 and then nothing in 1965.
i asked, "why do we have so many 1965s & 1966s in this cup and no 1963s, 1961s, etc?" the lightbulb then went on for her. |

Now, if they were 65 and 66 halves, those would be 40% and a nice score, but the quarters are only worth 25 cents. |
Re: got a very nice 1944 quarter in my change yesterday. remember to always check yo
A few years back I was waiting at grocery store check out behind a kid (around 10 or so) who was buying a LOAD of candy. After the total, the kid starting digging handfulls of change out of his pockets, all halves, quarters and dimes. When the first coin hit the counter I knew immediately what was going on, it was 90% and the kid had stolen it from someone in his family. There was no one else around and the cashier didn't seem to notice anything so I jumped in and bought it all (about $20) from the kid at face and, out of guilt, kicked in an extra $5. I figured someone was going to get it and it might as well be me.
I lost it in a burglary 2 years later, karma I guess. |

That sucks. I have yet to find silver in my change. |
Re: got a very nice 1944 quarter in my change yesterday. remember to always check yo
I hear it first too. One time I was given a bank envelope and before I opened it up, I told the old lady that there was a silver quarter in there. She about crapped when I opened it up and I was right. She thought I was a psychic.

Always look in spare change too, so far only a war nickel. Even that felt like a little treasure.

I have over 200 pounds in change that i have accumulated since the 1980s...pocket change that just dumped out of my pocket and i kept saving it. Have been thinking about going threw it; but been putting it off...question is what are odds with this amount of coins that i can find rare one?.
